ROME'S MYSTERIES: MASTRO TITTA, THE FEARED EXECUTIONER
When we think of Rome, images of historical landmarks, delicious cuisine, and artistic
masterpieces usually come to mind. But did you know there’s a darker side to the city’s
history? With Halloween just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to revisit some of its
most chilling characters.
Today, we’re introducing you to one of Rome’s most notorious figures: Mastro Titta, the
city's official executioner. The man who, for decades, quite literally gave the people of
the Eternal City nightmares.
Imagine wandering the streets of Rome in the 19th century. Out of nowhere, you hear
whispers of fear rippling through the crowd: “Mastro Titta crossed the bridge!”.
Suddenly, you realize the city’s official executioner is making his way to the next
unfortunate soul. The mere mention of his name sent chills down people’s spines.
From 1796 to 1864, Mastro Titta, born Giovanni Battista Bugatti, was responsible for a
staggering 516 executions. His first one took place in 1796, when he was only 17.
Despite the macabre nature of his job, Bugatti was known to show a softer side. Legend
has it that he would offer the condemned a sip of wine or a pinch of tobacco before
carrying out their sentence. He was also a devout man, attending confession before every
execution.
During Mastro Titta’s time, Rome was part of the Papal States, and the Pope himself
authorized public executions. He served under several popes, carrying out his
gruesome orders for nearly 70 years.
To protect him from potential revenge by the families of those he executed, Mastro Titta
was forbidden from crossing the Ponte Sant'Angelo unless it was for work. That’s
where the terrifying saying “Mastro Titta crossed the bridge” comes from, meaning
someone’s time had come.
Mastro Titta’s reputation blends fact and legend. Some saw him as a figure of terror,
while others described him as a humble man who carried out his duties with surprising
efficiency and compassion.
Though he died in 1869, his legend lives on. To this day, his name evokes fear in Roman
folklore. His infamy was so great that parents would warn misbehaving children, “If
you don’t behave, Mastro Titta will come for you.” A bedtime story guaranteed to keep you
awake.
Like any good Roman legend, Mastro Titta’s story didn’t end with his death. His ghost is
said to wander the sites of his executions, draped in the scarlet cloak he wore
during his gruesome duties. Some even claim he still offers passersby a pinch of
tobacco, just as he did for the condemned.
So, if you’re looking for a spine-chilling tale to share around the bonfire this Halloween,
here it is. But why stop at Mastro Titta? If his story has piqued your interest, there’s a
whole world of ghost stories waiting for you in Rome!
